On a sunny summer day, you close your eyes and feel the warm breeze and hear a unique sound like you would on cruise ship ready to take you on a tropical journey.  Is it a dream?  No, it is a summer celebration!

On Tuesday June 27, a member of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra performed a steel drum concert for Veterans at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center. This event was held in our outdoor pavilion. The musician played a variety of songs for everyone in the audience to enjoy.  The pavilion was filled with smiles and the unique sounds of the instrument.

“This partnership is on the leading edge of a new trend...”

This event also celebrated a new partnership between Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO) and the Battle Creek VAMC Therapeutic Recreation Section. The mission of KSO is to serve the community through outstanding musical listening and learning experiences.  Therapeutic Recreation’s, mission is to improve and enrich all aspects of a Veteran’s functioning through active therapy and/or meaningful therapeutic activities to maintain or improve independence and quality of life.  Therapeutic Recreation at the Battle Creek VA includes music and creative arts therapy for Veterans.

“This partnership is on the leading edge of a new trend in how symphonies are partnering in the communities,” said Dana Castanier, Creative Arts Therapist.

Music Therapy has been clinically proven to have many benefits, including:

  • Promoting Wellness
  • Managing Stress
  • Alleviating Pain
  • Expressing Feelings
  • Enhancing Memory
  • Improving Communication
  • Promoting Physical Rehabilitation

This is the beginning a fruitful and exciting partnership.  Follow our Facebook Page or watch our calendar for more information on future musical events with the KSO.

This festive event also marked the start of our Summer Serve youth volunteer program.  Twenty five youth volunteers, ages 14 and up, are participating in the program this summer.  They will spend part of their break from school giving back to Veterans and learning about careers in the medical field.  To learn more about volunteering at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, please visit our Volunteer and Donate page.

Special thanks to the Kalamazoo Symphony and Therapeutic Recreation for sponsoring this summer celebration!
