The Battle Creek VA Medical Center held an open house for the newly remodeled Community Living Center unit. This unit will open for residents on February 1, 2016 and provide a beautiful, patient-centered environment for Palliative Care.
Cheryl Vanderploeg, RN, Community Living Center Nursing Supervisor, explains, “The rooms are designed with the Veterans’ comfort in mind.” The soft colors and Michigan scenery artwork create a pleasant environment. There are small sitting areas and gathering spaces throughout the unit designed to allow for family visits and places for small groups to socialize. “Even the resident dry erase boards can be personalized for the space,” said Vanderploeg.

Resident Common Area
Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness. The goal of such palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. “This new space creates a wonderful environment for our Veterans and their families,” said Shelly Williamson, MSN, RN, CHPN, Palliative Care Coordinator.
The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is proud of our long history of caring for our Veterans. We continue to put Veterans at the center of what we do. This newly renovated space is a shining example of how we continue to move forward to provide the best care possible for the Veterans we serve.
