Battle Creek VAMC Virtual University

The Battle Creek VAMC and CBOCs have created the Virtual VA University to serve our Veterans in the community during the COVID 19 crisis. We want to ensure that our Veterans have the ability to stay connected in their recovery.

Veterans interested in attending these phone or online group will need to contact the facilitator of the group and register to attend. They will either need to provide their email and phone number so they can be included on the Video Connect Group or they will be provided a call in number with a code in order to connect to the group by phone.

Group space is limited and are offered on a first come first serve basis.

Some groups have the options of direct call and their phone numbers and access codes have been included. Please understand that group space is limited and individuals will be able to join on a first come, first serve basis.

Strength at Home

These are ongoing sessions.  Dates and times will be developed by the Veteran and clinician.

This is a comprehensive program to assist Veterans struggling with anger and conflict in relationships.  There are 12, two hour sessions, that focus on:

Understanding abusive behavior and taking responsibility for abuse, understanding anger and trauma, learning ways to deescalate situations that may lead to conflict and aggression, learning how to view situations in a less hostile manner, managing anger and stress more effectively, and communicating in more assertive ways.

Therapeutic Goals:

                To offer chair yoga and relaxation routines to help improve health and manage stress through breathing and movement as coping skills.

              To improve stress management through weekly practice in a positive social setting.

Relapse Prevention

Recovery is often challenging, and relapse is common, but many people successfully resume recovery after a relapse. A lapse or relapse does not have to derail your efforts to recover. It's important to work on changing all-or-nothing thinking. Since the possibility of relapse is always present when you’re living in recovery, arming yourself with a combination of relapse prevention techniques will make long-term sobriety attainable.

Middle of the Day Meditation

Group will start with introductions and identification of key stressors and close with identifying physical and mental reduction experienced. A full body guided meditation will allow participants to engage and muscle relaxation along with mental relaxation. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (Ionia Co. Courthouse)

CBT is a well-researched, efficacious, and time-limited psychotherapeutic approach that has been used to treat a number of mental and behavioral health conditions. CBT involves a structured approach that focuses on substance use disorders and relationships among cognitions.

This is a Veterans consumer council that is open to Veterans and family members. Therapeutic goals: 

To offer education about the emotional, social and physical benefits of participating in physical exercise, sport and/or physical leisure activities. 

To identify and address barriers to participating in exercise or sports. 

To provide Community, VA and virtual resource education to get more involved in exercise, sports and physical activities. 

To provide education/suggestions for functional fitness; exercises that can be done at home and with little to no equipment.
