Seamless Check-In & Information at Your Fingertips
To improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare for our Veterans, we have installed the VetLink kiosk in each of our check-in areas. The goal is to improve the Veterans’ experience during the check-in process. These VetLink kiosks allow Veterans to quickly check themselves in by following a few simple steps. VetLink kiosks are providing Veterans with convenient and efficient control of their own healthcare information. The easy-to-use touchscreen leads the user through each step, so there is little to no confusion. The check-in steps are as follows:
- Select “Check-in for Appointment.”
- Use the barcode scanner to read your Veterans Health Identification Card. If you don’t have your ID, you can use your Social Security Number instead.
- Enter your date of birth to verify your identity.
- Then, you can update your address, phone number, and other personal information right on the kiosk.
Immediately upon completing the check in process, you are placed on the waiting list. The clerk and the back office clinic are both notified.
Control Your Information
In addition to checking in, these touchscreen devices enable Veterans to complete several tasks without the assistance of a clerk. Right now, the VetLink kiosk allows you to:
- Check-in for scheduled appointments
- View your future appointments
- View, and validate, your insurance information
- Update your Next of Kin information
- Request beneficiary travel mileage reimbursement
- Request medical records
- View your account balance
- Respond to National and Site specific questionnaires
- Update Personal Contact Information
The VetLink kiosk also allows Veterans to print off a reminder slip with dates and times of future appointments. With future software updates, you will also be able to update your insurance information.
“It really is much quicker than waiting for a clerk.”
We spoke to several Veterans to find out how they felt about using the VetLink kiosk. We were not surprised to find a wide range of opinions.
A majority of the Veterans who used the kiosk prefer it to waiting in line for the clerk. They found it was quick and easy to check-in using the kiosk. Instead of having to wait in line at the clerk’s desk, they just walked up to the kiosk, checked in, and were seated within a minute. One veteran said “even if I do get caught up, there is someone right there to help me through it.” He went on to say that the check-in process is so simple; he could probably figure it out on his own if it did become confusing at any time.
Although some Veterans prefer to speak with a clerk to check in for their appointments, one Veteran noted how easy the kiosk was to use at the pharmacy: “The only place I do like using it is in the Pharmacy, because I don't have to wait in line to check-in. I just scan my ID card, and I wait for my prescriptions,” he said.
Another veteran said they only use the kiosk in the specialty clinic. Instead of having to figure out which clerk they need to speak with in order for them to get check in to the correct clinic, they use the kiosk. “It really is much quicker than waiting for a clerk,” she said.
Next time you come in for your appointment, we encourage you to try out the VetLink kiosk, although it is not mandatory. There will be a clerk to assist you with the kiosk, and to make sure the check-in process is completed.
