Physical Therapy
What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy (PT) is a type of treatment you may need when health problems make it hard to move around and do everyday tasks.

PT can help you move better and may relieve pain.  It also helps to improve or restore your physical function and your fitness level.

The goal of physical therapy is to make daily tasks and activities easier.  For example, it may help with walking, going up stairs, or getting in and out of bed.  Physical therapy can help recovery after some surgeries, as well.

Physical therapy almost always includes exercise.  It can include stretching, core exercise, weight lifting, and walking.  Your therapist will teach you an exercise program so that you can do it at home.

What does a Physical Therapist do?

Physical therapists (PTs) are movement experts who optimize quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education.

Physical therapists teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits.

PTs examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques, to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

Your PT may also use manual therapy, education, exercise, gait, and balance training and techniques such as heat, cold, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation.
