What We Do

The mission of the Veterans Transportation Service (VTS) is to improve the quality of life for Veterans by increasing access to health care through integrated and cost effective transportation solutions.

The VTS program is active at the Battle Creek VAMC and is intended to assist Veterans (both inpatients and outpatients) with transportation needs to appointments.  VTS provides shuttle services that run twice a day from the Battle Creek VA Medical Center to the VA Medical Centers in Ann Arbor and Detroit and once per day from the Battle Creek VA Medical Center to the Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Wyoming and the Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Muskegon.

VTS provides a shuttle run every Tuesday and Thursday from the Lansing Ingham County Building, located at 5303 S. Cedar Street, Lansing, MI. With a return to Lansing in the afternoon. This shuttle can accommodate Veterans who utilize wheelchairs, scooters, and oxygen.

The VA Volunteer Transportation Network (VTN) provides a DAV van from the Benton Harbor Community Based Outpatient Clinic located at 701 Main Street St. Joseph, MI 49085. This van also stops at locations in Benton Harbor, Coloma, Watervliet, Hartford, and Paw Paw. Please note this van is not wheelchair accessible and there are no oxygen tanks/devices allowed on the van. Attendants are welcome to ride for free.

The VTN also provides a van that starts from Niles Senior Center located at with 1109 Bell Road Niles, Mi with a stop in Cassopolis, Mi to Battle Creek VA Medical Center every Tuesday and Thursday. Please note this van is not wheelchair accessible and there are no oxygen tanks/devices allowed on the van.

The VTS program also provides door-to-door transportation to blind rehabilitation Veterans in VISN 10 that come to the Battle Creek VAMC to be seen in the Visual Impairment Services Outpatient Rehabilitation (VISOR) Clinic. In addition, the VTS program has some availability to provide special mode transportation to Veterans meeting the eligibility requirements.

How Do I Schedule A Ride?

To schedule a ride on the Battle Creek shuttles, please call the VTS Transportation Coordinators at (269) 966-5600 ext. 33871 or toll free 1-888-214-1247, ext. 33871. Please call us as soon as you schedule your appointment and within 24 hours when canceling a ride.

Courtesy Shuttle Guidelines

This shuttle service is being provided as a “courtesy” ride to assist Veterans in getting to and from your scheduled appointments at Battle Creek, Ann Arbor and/or Detroit VA Medical Center. There are two shuttles scheduled to depart Battle Creek VA Medical Center, Monday through Friday (shuttle will not run on Saturday, Sundays or Holidays), one going to the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and one going to the Wyoming/Muskegon VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

The following guidelines are provided for Veterans taking advantage of this service. Riding the shuttle is dependent upon space:

  1. You MUST have a scheduled appointment at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, Ann Arbor and/or Detroit VA Medical Center or the Wyoming Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
  2. You MUST have a ride to and from the location of shuttle pickup/drop-off. 
  3. Canteen Service is available for you to purchase meals and/or snacks.
  4. NO alcoholic beverages are allowed on the shuttle.
  5. If you are intoxicated or uncooperative you will not be permitted to ride.
  6. To schedule a ride on the shuttle, please call the Transportation Coordinators at (269) 966-5600, Ext. 33871. (For long-distance callers, please call 1-888-214-1247, ext. 33871) from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. You may leave a message. Please include your name, last 4 of your Social Security number, place and time of appointment and a call back number. You will be contacted within 48 hours except on weekends and holidays.
  7. You MUST notify/contact us if your appointment is cancelled, rescheduled or you make other transportation arrangements.
  8. You MUST notify/contact VTS Office a minimal of 48 hours to arrange Special Mode transportation.
  9. If you use a motorized scooter or an amigo, please make us aware of this when you call.
Checking In For Departures and Lodging

For Battle Creek VA departures – Please check in at the Urgent Care desk in Building 2 with the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) 15 minutes before the shuttle is scheduled to leave.

For Battle Creek VA Lodging – Please check in at the Urgent Care desk in Building 2 starting at 4:45pm. Female lodgers should inform the NoD of their need for lodging at least 48 hours prior to lodging. The NoD can be contacted at (269) 223-5338 or toll-free at (888) 214-1247 ext. 35338.

For Ann Arbor VA Lodging – Please inform the scheduling clinic that you will ride the shuttle and need to lodge.

For Muskegon CBOC Departures – Please check in with the clerk 15 minutes before the shuttle is scheduled to leave.

For Wyoming VA CBOC Departures - Please check in with the clerk 15 minutes before the shuttle is scheduled to leave.

VA Shuttle Express

The VA Shuttle Express is an on-station van that provides transportation from building to building to all staff, outpatients and visitors at the Battle Creek campus.
