What We Do

The WRC is an outpatient psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery program that assists Veterans living with serious mental illness (SMI) with learning, working, and social goals. Program staff partner with Veterans to develop tools to identify life goals that are individually meaningful and facilitate successful integration and meaningful roles in the community. Veterans create individualized Recovery Plans with the support and encouragement of a Recovery coach. Courses offered include: Social Skills Training, Healthy Relationships, Relapse Prevention, Mindfulness, Illness Management and Recovery, Addressing Stigma, Wellness, Peer Support, Art, Recreation, Exercise, Sleep, and Music.

Service Information

The Wellness & Recovery Center (WRC) is an outpatient program that promotes and supports personal recovery for Veterans affected by serious mental illness by assisting them with defining and developing life goals that lead to successful integration and meaningful roles in the community.

Admission Criteria

A Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) of 50 or lower (i.e., serious psychiatric symptoms or serious impairment in social, occupational, or school functioning) and an SMI diagnosis of psychosis, schizoaffective disorder, major mood disorder, or severe PTSD. Veterans must be psychiatrically and mentally stable to the extent they can participate safely in an outpatient setting.

WRC services include:

  • Social Skills training
  • Peer support services
  • Educational and leisure activities
  • Individual therapy
  • Psycho-education groups
  • Recreation/leisure groups
  • Family psycho-education groups
  • Wellness programming

WRC works closely and in conjunction with the other programs at the Battle Creek VAMC in which Veterans may be participating such as Supported Employment, the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, substance abuse services, the Domiciliary, and the MHICM program.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Veterans diagnosed with a mental illness resulting in a functional impairment that substantially interferes with, or limits, one or more major life activities.
  • Veterans diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness will be given priority for services.
  • Veterans must be psychiatrically and medically stable to the extent they are able to participate safely in an outpatient group setting.
